Fairhaven High School ~ Room # 312 12 Huttleston Avenue, Route: 6 Fairhaven, MA 02719
This specialized course for teachers, presented by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMASS-D) in conjunction with Ocean Explorium at New Bedford Seaport and the Connecting Oceans Academy (COA), will focus on Earth systems using physical science. We will focus primarily on the oceans role as a major component of the global and local climate. Special focus will use marine sciences to incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas into the classroom, state and national science curriculum frameworks. We will be using the new Ocean Explorim Science on a Sphere® (SOS) site and NASA’s GLOBE program. Participating teachers will receive GLOBE certification and work with a variety of visiting lecturers from UMASS Dartmouth and School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST). Additional class labs, hands-on activities and field experiences will be conducted at Fairhaven High School and local marine field sites. Participants will work together with other COA classroom teachers in creative new ways to make the “Marine Sciences for Teachers” curriculum come alive in their classrooms.
