Iñupiaq Whale Hunt

Questions for Discussion

  • How does whaling involve the entire community? What kind of relationship do the Iñupiat have with the whale? Why do the Iñupiat give thanks to the whale?
  • The video talks about "nalukataq," the whaling ceremony. Are there ceremonies in your community that bring everyone together? How do you feel during and after such a celebration?
  • Why does the village continue to hunt whales? What is their value to the village?
  • What is a "subsistence lifestyle"? Why has subsistence whaling continued?

Nalukataq is the time for community-wide celebration, feasting, and visiting. School is out for the summer and it's play time!

This is a beautiful video! I am excited to show it to my students and incorporate this learning center with the lessons I already teach, based on my visit to Barrow, Alaska. The explanation of the hunter's experience as well as the explanation of the relationship between whale and Inupiaq is exquisite.
