Traditional Choctaw Round Comb Design

The round comb pictured here resembles one photographed around 1930 in Philadelphia by Smithsonian researcher Frances Densmore. This comb was probably made between 1950 and 1960. The Choctaw “Round Comb”, as they are referred to by the Choctaw, originated from the Goody Combs Company in Atlanta Georgia. Henry Godman founded the company in 1907 and achieved a national distribution by the 1920’s. Production of this round comb style was discontinued in the early seventies. Tribal members combed the discount and second hand stores looking for the prized comb until Thallis Lewis at the tribes Cultural Affairs program arranged to re-create the comb and make it available to tribal members.
