Gray Whales Trapped in the Ice
In the fall of 1988, several gray whales were trapped by the ice as the Beaufort Sea froze off the coast of Barrow, Alaska. Roy Ahmagoak of Barrow cut a rectangular hole in the ice so they could breathe. Later, a Russian ice-breaker carved a passage through the ice that allowed the whales to escape and continue on their migration south.
