"Against the Wind" Haida-style canoe

"Against the Wind" Haida-style canoe

Made in 2000 by Tlingit artist Wayne Price of Haines, Alaska. This 20-foot red cedar Haida-style canoe is fully functional with paddles representing Eyak, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures. This is the first canoe of its type built in more than 100 years. A single log was shaped and hollowed out with an adze. The boat was then filled with water and hot rocks to stretch the gunwales for stability and increased carrying capacity. From the collection of the Alaska Native Heritage Center.
